Hay Joss Hse
"A Chinese syndicate lately built a joss house in the camp near Hay."
The Age, Wednesday 1 June 1887, p.6.
As with so many Joss Houses fire was a common danger:
"Seven houses within the Chinese camp at Hay were destroyed by fire on Friday night. The joss-house was gutted."
The Daily Telegraph, Monday 27 March 1893, p.1.
Though in this case the Joss House helped lessen the damage. As the fire "gradually extended in the direction of the Joss House, which was situated at the
northern side of the camp. This building is of brick, and although the roof caught fire, it acted as a check to the further progress of the flames, and the firemen were thus able to prevent its further progress."
The Hay Standard, Wednesday 29 March 1893, p.2.
