Albury - Chinese Camp - Townsend Street
"For some years past the Chinese camp situate at the bottom of Townscnd-stroet, hard by one of the principal thoroughfares of the town, has been a terrible nuisance to all the residents in the vicinity. In the first place it is a kind of rendezvous for all the prostitutes of the town, and a great source of demoralization to many lads, who hang about the place and loam to smoke opium, to say nothing of other vices. Secondly, the premises of the Chinese and their surroundings are so filthy, and the peculiar views of tho Cokstial gardeners upon the subject of manuring are so objectionable, that the place is really dangerous to the health of the town. During the week, however, I am glad to say, an attempt has been made to bring about a better state of things. Complaints having been lodged by householders in the vicinity, the Municipal Council directed the inspector of nuisances to proceed against all offenders against the sanitary by-laws with the utmost severity. In compliance with this order several Chinese were summoned for breach of the municipal regulations and mulcted in heavy penalties. It is to be hoped that the example may be effectual, for the Chinese camp just now literally "stinks in the nostrils of the ratepayers."
